once again, article borrowed from a community i follow [14 Jun 2006|03:26pm]
[ mood | worried ]

this sort of hit like a ton of bricks when i read it, as i have long been infatuated with the islands, and have an aunt who lives on Kaua'i. i have for a long time held an at least semi-joking desire to eventually settle there myself, but lets hope that IF that day comes, and that decision is actually made, there will actually BE any island to settle! as some of you may recall, i did travel there at least fairly recently, in Spring of 2005. you can see my photo gallery from that trip here.

Wildlife Thrive in Chernobyl's No-Go Zone (AFP)

All that's missing are all-terrain vehicles and souvenir stands. With lynx, wolves, eagles and wild horses, the radioactive no-go zone around Chernobyl has become a rich natural reserve in the 20 years since the accident at the nuclear power plant.

i guess for me it raises a lot of questions as to the longevity of the species in the area, general health, etc. how viable as a wildlife refuge is this place? the article points out that it will take decades for the radiation to dissapate. i hope to see some studies published on this matter in the near future.

This is something i really wish i could go to! but it appears to be just for graduate students. but still, i think it would be a really great oppurtunity to see what other people pursuing the fields that interest me are doing with their lives, where they're going, and i guess, what sort of outlook this stuff has for people like me. also, just ASKING people what they've done to get where they are could be really interesting to learn about. le sigh!

i've posted a lot of these (read: similar) pictures in fire_orchid, but just today i took the memory card from my broken digital camera over to Target to use their digital photo kiosk, and had these pictures burned to a CD. so horray. i have access now to the pictures from fwackoom and my backpacking trip from a couple of weeks ago that were on my camera before it died.

Permafrost in Siberia has begun melting as a result of global climate change; which could VASTLY increase greenhouse gas emissions due partially decayed plant matter that's been preserved in it since the last ice age.

well, i didn't create this journal for any specific reason aside from just wanting to reserve the username, in case in the future i might want to use it. it seems to have a single theme going for it though, so perhaps i'll have this journal be exclusively science/plant/environmental stuff. stay tuned.
